Class Description:
In this 12 week program, young artists will take inspiration from Hokulea and put to practice the concept of malama honua and will travel on an artistic, cultural, and geographical journey. They will start from the Big Island of Hawaii, exploring the gifts from our ahupuaa of Keauhou. What grows and lives here from mauka to makai. How do we take care of our environment and what can we create from our natural resources? Students will identify gifts from the land and create a collaborative ho’okupu (offering or gift) to bring on their voyage to Cuba.

In Cuba, we will explore their environment and learn about their natural resources, culture and art. The class will culminate in a festive party, celebrating Cuba’s music, food and culture.  What new place can we explore next?

Our Spring 2021 Youth Education Programs are supported by the Atherton Fund, Kukio Community Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation, Roberts Foundation, and our community of individual donors. We are grateful to be able to offer tuition for these programs at a 75% subsidized rate and free art supplies. It is our intention to provide access to all levels and keep our Youth Programs affordable during these uncertain times.
