Bumps, Lines, Teapots and Teacups, Oh My!

Description

Class Description:
This workshop will focus on exploring the use of bumps and lines, specifically in wheel-thrown teapot and cup and saucer utilitarian forms to create visually thematic cohesion. Students of different skill levels will strengthen valuable throwing techniques, as well as, how to troubleshoot throwing issues. Basic wheel-altered techniques and minor hand building components involving a tealeaf insert and a spout for a teapot will be included. This workshop will not only benefit less experienced students to generate valuable throwing skills through these specific pottery-wheel based forms, but also benefit advanced students by sharing nuance and depth into proportion, utilitarian-based decision-making and technical skill.

Less experienced students can expect to gain more confidence in their practice of basic throwing skills by the troubleshooting of many technically common wheel-throwing issues. I also want to make sure to leave them with some idea of proportionality of the basic parts of a teapot. More advanced level students can expect to gain a more articulated deepening of knowledge about proportionality of teapots, teacups and saucers. The aim for more advanced students is to refine their understanding and practice of these forms, so that they will think more critically about their making process. The ultimate goal is for everyone to have fun and enjoy themselves, so that creativity flows more freely in a focused, but explorative atmosphere.
