Class description:
Whether you’re interested in hand-building or throwing on the potter’s wheel, this class is appropriate for beginners and intermediates alike. We will cover basic pottery techniques including wedging, hand-building, throwing, trimming, decorating, and glazing.

Syllabus:
Session 1, October 6: Studio Policy, Introductions, Cylinder (cup) Demo on the Wheel 
Session 2, October 13: Trimming on the Wheel, Attaching a Handle Demo
Session 3, October 20: Bowl Demo on the Wheel
Session 4, October 27: Hand-Building a Cylinder (cup or vase) Demo
Session 5, November 3: Hand-Building a Bowl or Plate
Session 6, November 10: Glaze Talk Demo *Last day for wet work *bisque firing before next class
Session 7, November 17: Glaze Day *glaze fire before next class
Session 8, November 24: Critique

Instructor’s Bio:
Allison Tan was born and raised in Southern California where her passion for culinary arts led to a degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management from California Polytechnic University in Pomona, CA. After 20 years in the hospitality industry, seeking more creative endeavors, she discovered the Donkey Mill Art Center and hasn’t left since. She is currently the ceramic studio apprentice as well as e-commerce/marketing/gallery shop consultant at the Mill, where she continues to explore various mediums of art. 

The Mill will provide:
- Half bag of clay
- DMAC glazes and underglaze products, bisque and glaze firing

Students Should Bring:
- Something to drink and snack in reusable containers
- Sketchbook

Our Fall 2021 Youth Education Programs are supported by the West Hawaii Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation, Roberts Foundation, and our community of individual donors.
