Have you ever wanted to take a class at the Donkey Mill but never had time? Are you interested in spending a few hours experiencing a new art technique? If this sounds like you, please join us for our Holiday Art Experiences for Adults! Leave the kids at home, bring a friend, and come make and create in our various studios for a new art experience. Please choose one activity. Social distancing will be in place and masks are required. Please register in advance online, or call 808-322-3362. No drop-in's please.

ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES

Print Studio + Main Space: Cartes de voeux with Jerry Walsh
The Holiday Season is coming! The french words Cartes de voeux or greeting cards inspire our printmaking activity with Jerry. Design, carve and print your own unique holiday cards for your family and friends this year with a simple relief printmaking technique. Participants will use the “u” and “v” gouge, learn a bit about inking, paper registration and hand printing.

On the Lawn: Holiday Floral Arrangements with Gerald Lucena
Join Gerald Lucena in a floral arrangement class inspired by the snows on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.  A color story of blues and white along with evergreens will help participants get into the winter season and appreciate nature’s repose. The basic elements of floral design will be covered (symmetry/asymmetry, color, and texture) but for those who want to venture on the wild side, “outside of the box” exploration will also be encouraged.

Workshop will include
-containers (glass or ceramic)
-floral foam
-evergreens
-indigo dyed branches

Students should bring
-shears
-one dozen or more of white flowers (orchids, chrysanthemums, carnations, etc)
*optional: any material(s) such as greenery or dried materials

Metals Studio: Create a Copper Pendant, Key Chain or Pair of Earrings with Laurel Schultz
Metals made easy! Have you ever wanted to explore metals but have been intimidated by all the tools? In this workshop you will learn to cut, drill and texture a copper sheet. Start with the basics and create your first piece of metalwork.

Instructor bios:
Gerald Lucena was born and raised in Captain Cook, Hawaii. He earned his BFA in drawing and painting from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He also attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Since then, he has exhibited in Hawaii, California, and Massachusetts and has created public murals for the West Hawaii Community Health Center in Kealakekua, Innovations Public Charter School in Kailua-Kona, and was part of the collaborative team of artists for Aloha Aina mural on Palani and Kuakini. He also designs sets and costumes for the Aloha Performing Arts Company at the historical Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu, Hawaii. Most recent projects at the Aloha Theatre include designing the set for the Christopher Durang play ‘Beyond Therapy’ which he also had a part in playing Andrew. Gerald Lucena has taught drawing, painting, papermaking, and mixed media to all ages and has been part of the DMAC ohana for over 15 years. He has been working as a teaching artist for the Artist in the Schools program in Holualoa and Kahakai Elementary.
 
Gerald Thomas Walsh III (a.k.a. Jerry Walsh) is a local artist who has lived in the Big Island all his life.  Graduating from University of Hawaii at Hilo, Gerald’s major was a B.A in general art.  In the process of studying and practicing art, he soon found his passion for printmaking.  His work explores patterns in both the organic and geometric sense as they embody images in relation to the human figure.  Gerald’s prints have been shown in numerous exhibits of the Donkey Mill as well as the Annual Japanese Chamber of Commerce Exhibit in Oahu.  Gerald Walsh was a full time teacher at Makua Lani Christian Academy where he taught art from Kindergarten through 7th grade.  He is currently focusing on his own printmaking and is working for Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary.  

Laurel Schultz is a photographer and multimedia artist whose work explores fragments and figments of the natural world as a lens on human nature. She received an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at the University of Washington in Seattle, and a certificate from the Photography Center Northwest. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States.. She has taught photography at the University of Washington, the Photographic Center Northwest and, more recently, at the Donkey Mill Art Center. Laurel first encountered metalsmithing at the Donkey Mill Art Center under master teacher Kristin Shiga, and has been exploring the endless possibilities of this material ever since. She has previously taught metals at summer's Adult Art Experience and greatly enjoyed sharing the basics with newcomers to Donkey Mill's metals studio.
