On the Wheel for Intermediates

Class Description: Students will learn advanced wheel techniques, decorating and glaze methods. Instruction will be according to each individual’s abilities.  
 
Instructor Bio: Jim Neupert has been working full time in clay for over 35 years. In the winter months, he works on the Big Island of Hawaii and summer months he is in the Methow Valley in North Central Washington. Jim taught at Whitworth University for 8 years before moving to the Methow Valley, where he currently teaches adults and kids at his private studio. Neupert's work has been displayed at the Washington State Capital as well as several museums. His training is extensive. He has a Master’s Degree in Art, studied in Japan under master potter Takeo Sudo, and has worked with internationally-recognized Italian artist Nino Caruso on public art pieces. Neupert has been a dedicated teaching artist with the Mill for the past eight years.
 
Supply fee includes:
One 25lb bag of clay
DMAC glazes and underglaze products, bisque and glaze firing
 
Students should bring:
- We have community ceramic tools to use but you may wish to bring your favorites (with your name on them!) if you have them
- Dress to get muddy!
- Hair ties if you have long hair 
- Short nails 
- A towel for wiping your hands
- 3 gallon bucket with lid if you want to save your clay
- Notebook/Sketchbook
- List of items you would like to make - your goals
- Water bottle
- Sack
 
Course Syllabus (will vary according to student need)
Week 1: Throwing 4 lbs, cylinders, new decorations  
Week 2: Trimming and decorations, Throwing large bowls,  
Week 3: Lidded vessels, several styles  
Week 4: Glazing, advanced techniques 
Week 5: Student directed demo  
Week 6: Glazing, finished work critique
