Class Description:
Surrealists often put strange, unlikely objects or animals together to create weird made-up characters. In this 4 day intensive, young artists will explore their own personalities and draw inspiration from nature, animals and their imagination to inform the design of their fantastic creatures. They will take their ideas to create a relief print using gomuban, gouging knives, ink and paper. Students will learn about positive and negative space, understand the balance of light and dark, master various carving techniques, learn to register their blocks and use the press. Most of all, young artists will have fun sharing their weird creativity with others. The 4 days will culminate with a print exchange, a gallery walk, show and tell and maybe an ice cream party :)

Our Fall 2021 Youth Education Programs are supported by the West Hawaii Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation, Roberts Foundation, and our community of individual donors. We are grateful to be able to offer tuition for these programs at a 25% subsidized rate and free art supplies. It is our intention to provide access to all levels and keep our Youth Programs affordable during these times.
