Class Description: Aki Matsuri or Autumn Festival is a Japanese tradition that celebrates the change of season with food, music and placing a good intention for an abundant harvest for the well-being of the community. Join Ms. Akiko to explore some of these traditions through art and dance. Young artists will explore the Japanese language,  create omen (Japanese masks) depicting animals or human faces that show joy and humor using papier mache, explore pattern making to make a hachimaki (cloth headband) and uchiwa (fan) using an orizome technique and indigo and more! The program will culminate in a Bon Odori (dance) using their creations made through the week to celebrate their ancestors and the cycle of life.

Our Fall 2021 Youth Education Programs are supported by the West Hawaii Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation, Roberts Foundation, and our community of individual donors. We are grateful to be able to offer tuition for these programs at a 25% subsidized rate and free art supplies. It is our intention to provide access to all levels and keep our Youth Programs affordable during these times.
