Class description:

In this six session class, students will learn and continue to explore three distinct styles of printmaking; relief, monotype, and collograph. Through various techniques, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of tools and equipment, ink preparation, methods and storage, paper prep and registration, and much more. The class will allow students to play, discover and express their ideas through newly acquired skills in producing multiple images.  Students with some back ground in printmaking will work on their own projects and become more independent with the use of tool and equipment so they may access the open studio hours beyond the classroom.Class sessions will consist of demos, independent work, discussions, and critique.  

Syllabus:

Week 1 – Relief Printmaking: Introduction, studio policy, relief printmaking explained, tool use, brief guide to composition, 2 multiple-block print, ink management, studio space.  (Note: Intermediate level students will mix their own ink with strict guidelines for multiple block print, whereas beginning level students will have more of an abstract approach and will work with only two colors)

Week 2 – Printing Multi-blocks: demo, registration, printing press procedure, cleaning, tool use, ink management.  (Both Intermediate and beginners level will have 2 gomuban pieces, beginners have the option of carving one plate and using that single block for a multi-print through the process of rotation) – Homework of researching collagraph with links sent.  Create a sketch or concept of idea.  

Week 3 – Collagraph: Intro, tool use, materials, spackle, shellac, cleanup

Week 4 – Collagraph Printing: Demo, registration, printing press procedure, cleaning, tool use, ink management. 

Week 5 – Monotype: Intro, demo, registration, tool use, materials, applying & subtracting ink, building layers.  

Week 6 – Monotype: creating a monotype and a relief print together.  Demo, registration, printing, cleaning, critiquing, signing artwork.

Instructor bio: 

Gerald Thomas Walsh III is a local artist who has lived in the Big Island all his life. Graduating from University of Hawaii at Hilo, Gerald’s major was a B.A in general art.  In the process of studying and practicing art, he soon found his passion for printmaking. His work explores patterns in both the organic and geometric sense as they embody images in relation to the human figure. Gerald’s prints have been shown in numerous exhibits of the Donkey Mill as well as the Annual Japanese Chamber of Commerce Exhibit in Oahu. Gerald Walsh was a full time teacher at Makua Lani Christian Academy where he taught art from Kindergarten through 7th grade.  He is currently focusing on his own printmaking and is working for Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary.
