Class description:

In this basic introduction to metalworking each participant will design and create their own unique piece of jewelry or personal ornament by learning and applying the basic metalsmithing skills of texturing, cutting and drilling, and soldering. Each student will design and create a unique piece of jewelry or ornament for themselves or a loved one using the skills acquired in the class.

Our Spring 2021 Youth Education Programs are supported by the Atherton Family Foundation, Kukio Community Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation, and our community of individual donors. We are grateful to be able to offer tuition for these programs at a 75% subsidized rate and free art supplies. It is our intention to provide access to all levels and keep our Youth Programs affordable during these uncertain times.

Syllabus

Day 1: Learn to cut, drill, texture and patina metal.

Day 2: Learn to work with a torch to anneal (soften) metal and to solder metals together.

Day 3: Put it all together: finish your project and learn about jump rings, earwires and basic chains..

Teacher Bio:

Laurel Schultz is a photographer and multimedia artist whose work explores fragments and figments of the natural world as a lens on human nature. She received an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at the University of Washington in Seattle, and a certificate from the Photography Center Northwest. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States.. She has taught photography at the University of Washington, the Photographic Center Northwest and, more recently, at the Donkey Mill Art Center.  Laurel first encountered metalsmithing at the Donkey Mill Art Center under master teacher Kristin Shiga, and has been exploring the endless possibilities of this material ever since. She has previously taught metals at summer's Adult Art Experience and greatly enjoyed sharing the basics with newcomers to Donkey Mill's metals studio.
